The History of Hydroseeding

Sep 06, 2023

Hydroseeding is an efficient form of seeding that is often considered to be more affordable than laying sod. This form of seeding involves the technique of spreading a specialized grass seed slurry over the ground. This is an effective way to plant grass and prevent soil erosion. The slurry is made of seeds, mulch, water, fertilizer, biostimulants, and sometimes a green-tinted dye. Let’s look at a quick overview of the history of hydroseeding.

Invention of Hydroseeding

According to the International Association of HydroSeeding Professionals, this process was invented in the 1940s by a Connecticut Highway Department employee named Maurice Mandel. He created this method to improve the way seeding was done on the sides of expressway embankments. This method was quickly put into use and was made commercial by Charlie Finn. He sold the first hydroseeder machine. His invention involved a mixing unit as well as a sprayer unit to provide a steady stream of the slurry at a steady pressure. This was the start of a modern hydroseeding company.

Hydroseeding Today

The main difference between the early versions of hydroseeding and today’s version is that all ingredients are added to the slurry. Today there are many different types of additives that can be used to ensure the seeds grow well. Some seeds are even pre-germinated before being dispersed to ensure that they sprout and take root faster.

Applications

Originally, hydroseeding was used for highway embankments that couldn’t otherwise be seeded effectively. This was needed for erosion control on the embankments. Today, hydroseeding can be used for seeding fields, feeding livestock, seeding athletic fields, and erosion control, and it can even be used to plant fields of wildflowers in greenspaces.
